Sugaring or Hair Removal Cream: Which Should You Choose?

What is Sugaring and Hair Removal Cream?

Hair removal creams work by breaking down the keratin protein in your hair. It damages it until it is so soft and weak that the hairs can be wiped away.

On the other hand sugaring is a new type of hair removal technique that pulls your hairs using a sugaring paste which is essential a mixture of sugar, lemon and water. The key difference is that the hairs are pulled in the natural direction. This is surprisingly found not be as painful when compared to traditional waxing.

What is the difference?

Both sugaring and depilatory cream are quick. The amount it takes to get rid of the hairs is more or less the same. They both work well with soft and thin hairs. They both offer stubble free skin however with depilatory cream the hair can regrowth in as little as two days.

Which one is more painful?

Depilatory cream are known to be pain free. This is possibly the most important benefit of hair removal creams.

However, sugaring is on last place on the pain ladder. If you are able to tolerate little pain this is for you. As Emily Rekstis from SELF had found that sugaring is a mild stinging sensation and the best part is the more you do it the less pain you feel because unlike with depilatory cream the roots of the hairs are removed. The follicles are not fed nutrients and over time the experience becomes more gentle.

Winner: Depilatory Cream

Which one lasts longer?

Depilatory creams tend to remove only the outer part of the hairs, thus the results only last around 2-3 days. Sugaring however lasts around 4-6 weeks. The experience with sugaring is also more satisfactory as there is less irritation and you do not have to deal with stubble after 2-3 days.

Winner: Sugaring

Which one is safer?

Depilatory cream contains strong chemicals that can potentially injure the skin. The cream damages proteins (certain types), our skin is made up of proteins. This damage weakens our surface and it triggers our immune system. As a result your skin becomes very sensitive in the sun. Additionally, calcium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide present in depilatory creams can irritate and darken the skin – due to this your upper layer of skin may permanently be damaged.
Evellere Sugaring is organic, chemical free, vegan and most importantly sustainable. The very simple ingredient list; sugar, lemon and water, will certainly not cause any adverse effects that depilatory cream may cause

Winner: Sugaring is Safer

Which one is better for intimate areas?

Both, depilatory cream and sugaring can be used to get rid of the unwanted hairs. However, sugaring is a lot safer on the skin. The disadvantages that come with sugaring are easily eliminated by Evellere sugaring experts. They will be super fast and the pain will not spread into multiple slots but one. Therefore, you will be free in a few goes.
Winner: Sugaring

Which one costs more?

With depilatory cream you need to buy many different types, specifically for different areas of the body. Additionally, you may need to buy additional creams that go with the hair removal cream. Sugaring is super affordable as it gets popularised. We would say that they are tied on price. Maybe, the overall quality and experience makes sugaring

 more affordable.

When that’s not enough, email Evellere at and ask for your one-time try sugaring discount code. We will be more than happy to get that arranged for you. 🙂

Winner: Sugaring in Affordability

Which one has an overall more pleasing experience?

Depilatory cream is known to have a strong smell. Many users found that the smell made them feel extremely nauseous. On top of this people have to keep it for a certain time. Many have found that even if the instructions are followed they feel disappointed that it does not always work.

Sugaring is made of only 3 key ingredients; sugar, lemon and water. The sugaring paste certainly smells nice and fresh. In fact, it can smells so good you can eat it (and it is safe to eat it too 😉 ). On top of that our Evellere salon experts started practicing before sugaring became a thing. We have clear ambitions and a clear mission that is to be the leading expert in sugaring and to provide outstanding hair removal experience.

Winner: Sugaring

Due to the disadvantages that depilatory cream offer, we have a clear winner here. In the long run sugaring is a clear winner.

Sugaring is the future and the future is now.

Brazilian Wax Got Better With Sugaring

What is a Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian wax removes all pubic hair from the front to the back using wax based paste.

What is a Sugaring Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian sugaring removes hair from the same area as a Brazilian Wax but it is done using a sugaring paste and using a different technique. Hair is pulled in the natural direction of hair growth. This makes makes sugaring less painful, safer as the risk of ingrown hairs is at minimum, less irritable and generally a better experience.

sugaring v waxing

Sugaring Brazilian Wax is Gentler (and Safer) than Traditional Waxing

Many of our customers say that their experience with sugaring is a lot better and peaceful than with waxing. And they are quite right. Hot wax attaches to both the hair and the skin, the pull can damage the skin and cause redness, swelling, inflammation or even bruising as the dermatologist H. Sobel describes it.

Additionally, if the wax is too hot, it can burn the upper layer of the skin, especially in the areas with sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin are the most vulnerable to hot wax, they are the ones that go through more irritation as a result of the wax. If the skin is burned your whole body goes through the inflammatory response. The epidermis (the upper layer) if damaged may never completely recover from its natural appearance.

Sugaring on the other hand is not hot, it will never burn your skin. It is applied at room temperature. It is fully soluble and will never stick to your skin. The chances of the epidermis to be damages is close to none.

Sugaring Irritates Less

Emily Rekstis from SELF has reported her first-hand experience. She found out that Brazilian sugaring wax is far less irritable. After her sugaring the skin did not break into red patches. Getting red patches completely ruins the whole experience and the purpose of getting waxed – hence why they say once you try sugaring you will never go back.

Sugaring is Less Painful

Many others including our star Emily found that it is far less painful than traditional waxing. It is definitely not pain-free but not please-get-me-out-of-here pain. With Sugaring your hairs are not pulled in the opposite direction but in the natural direction. Your hairs do not go out of their natural travel.

Lastly, the best benefit with sugaring is that it doesn’t break hairs but actually sticks to the root (because of the direction of sugar paste application) it removes the roots and the follicles which in return will have less supply of nutrients, therefore overtime it will be even more gentle.

Sugaring or Waxing: Which Should You Choose?

What is Sugaring and Waxing?

Sugaring is a hair removal method in which sugar mixture is applied to skin in the opposite direction. Then the mixture is pulled together with the hairs in the natural direction of your hair.

As opposed to waxing where your hair is applied in the natural direction but pulled in the opposite direction of its growth.

Because of the direction of the pull the results greatly differ.

Sugaring Mixture or Waxing Mixture

In sugaring mixture (or paste as some call it) is added sugar which is essentially fructose and glucose, lemon (yes, actual lemon juice!) and water.

The sugaring mixture is applied at room temperature. We prepare it before our appointments and let it cool down. Whereas wax is applied warm. Generally heated and applied using a wooden applicator.

Wax mixture can contain many ingredients, rosin is the most popular ingredient. Rosin is extracted from pine tree resins. Some people can be allergic to natural pine tree rosins. The combination of ethylene and vinyl acetate which gives it elasticity. According New Jersey State Report it can cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, confusion and unconsciousness.

Sugaring Process or Waxing Process

Sugaring paste is applied at room temperature or warm in the opposite of natural direction of the skin and removed in the natural direction.

Wax is applied hot or very warm in the natural direction of the hair but removed in the opposite. Due to the direction of removal, it can break hair and not remove them from the root. Additionally, it can be harsh on skin and some wax mixtures may stick to both skin and hair. Due to this wax paste can only be applied once or twice to the same area.

Due to this sugaring is known to be less irritating than traditional waxing.

Sugaring or Waxing: Less Painful

We understand that both sugaring and waxing can be found painful. Clients suggest that sugaring is less painful due to the direction of removal. There are however some additional techniques that Evellere sugaring trained experts do in order to make it less painful.

  • We pull lighting fast so you only have to feel it once.
  • After each pull Evellere experts put their hand on top of the surface – this rewires your brain to concentrate on the touch rather than the pain.
  • We communicate with you and ask of your preferences. Sometimes we can sing together to take our minds off it. 🙂
Our bodies can build tolerance, with more visits it gets less and less painful.

Sugaring or Waxing: Side Effects

Both sugaring and waxing can cause slight redness and bumps. This is a normal body reaction. It will subside within 2-3 days.

With waxing, there is an additional potential risk of ingrown hairs because of the hair breakage.

Sugaring or Waxing: Not Suitable For

Sugaring and Waxing procedures are not done for the following groups.

  • You are on your period – this is due to the skin being more sensitive
  • You are in your last trimester of pregnancy
  • You have recent tattoos
  • You take medication that makes your skin sensitive for example: Accutane, Retin-A, hormone replacements, hormonal birth control. Consult with your doctor prior appointment.

Note: General Practitioners and Doctors generally recommend sugaring because it sticks to the hair and not the skin.

Sugaring or Waxing: Sustainability

Waxing salons use wax heaters which are made out of plastic contribute to general plastic pollution which has become one of the most pressing environmental issues. These heaters consume a lot of electricity (especially in the long run) in order to keep the wax hot at 70 to 100 degrees Celsius. Wax has to be warmed up each time for new customers. Additionally, it uses disposable applicators which contribute further to climate change.

Sugaring on the other hand is sustainable. It does not use disposable applicators nor uses heaters.
